Always wanted to give making a backpack a try, but you think it’s hard?! Don’t be afraid and give the Paco Backpack a try! The Paco Backpack is a versatile, easy to sew backpack with a front  closure.  You can make it as a simple backpack without the additional front or side pockets, or you can add all the cool features like a zipper front pocket, an inner pocket, a zipper closure, swivel side hook for your keys, adjustable straps, water bottle pocket etc. The Paco backpack comes in three sizes. The smallest is perfect for little kids and the biggest is perfectly suitable for adults to take to the office or on daytrips. With what options will you make yours?

Skill Level for the Paco Backpack:

Paco is suitable for advanced beginning sewists. The pattern can be made without zippers, but you can make it ‘harder’ by adding the zippered front pocket. The use of thicker, non-stretch fabrics might also be something new. However, when sewing slowly and following the clearly and step by step explained construction in the instructions, you will definitely get a FAB Paco backpack as a result.

Suggested material for the Paco Backpack:

To create a Paco Backpack, we suggest to use stable non-stretch fabrics like: softshell, canvas, jeans, (faux) leather, vinyl, oilskin, wax cotton coated cotton, cork or PU. When using a lighter fabric, the backpack might become saggy. We advise you to carefully interface these kinds of fabrics for stability. A more extensive list of suggested materials and interfacing is included in the instructions.

Other required materials: webbing, zippers, swivels, sliders, zipper pulls.

Necessary supplies for the Paco backpack

Apart from the right fabric, you also need the following supplies:

  • Closure for the front like a swivel side hook or side release bucket.
  • 2 strap sliders
  • 2 rectangle rings
  • Webbing
  • Interfacing
  • Optional: Swivel side hook, zipper for the front pocket/inner pocket and/or to close the bag.

Your webbing, strap sliders, front closure and rectangle rings should match. So if you use 1″ (25mm) webbing, your supplies should also be the same size.
